Human Living Library: Cantonese

“One of the biggest [marginalizations] of all is the failure to understand Hong Kong and Cantonese people as their own identity - it'll often bleed into being Chinese and at this point in time in history and political history that's a really important distinction to make.”

Richard

Cantonese

Here Richard talks about his life experiences and the impact of prejudice on his life. He highlights that there is a wide variety of people and cultures within Hong Kong and mainland China and that these differences should be both considered, respected and celebrated.

The Cantonese people or Yue people, are a Yue-speaking Han Chinese subgroup originating from or residing in the provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi (collectively known as the Liangguang region), in Southern Mainland China. Although more accurately, "Cantonese" refers only to Han Chinese with roots from Guangzhou and its satellite cities and towns, rather than simply and generally referring to the people of the Liangguang region. Cantonese is a language within the Chinese branch of the Sino-Tibetan languages originating from the city of Guangzhou and its surrounding area in Southeastern China.
