Referencing your work: All guidelines

How to reference and cite in your assignments. Includes Harvard, Footnote, APA, OSCOLA guidelines.

“Every scholar must learn how to cite and reference in the appropriate style.”

Mary Deane, Inside Track to Academic Research, Writing & Referencing

There are many different referencing styles - associations and societies create their own, journals create their own and universities create their own. The important thing is to use the correct one for your discipline (your tutors will advise).

Small errors in referencing technique will be forgiven but consistency is key. It is easier to be consistent if you do it right, so try to follow the guidelines as precisely as you can.

Exemptions

Chemistry students should use the Royal Society of Chemistry referencing style. This is not supported centrally but you can get help from your subject area tutors and download the pdf from the link given here.
