Reading lists

Your module reading lists are designed to guide you through the disciplinary knowledge needed to be successful in your studies and research.

Reading lists are integrated into your module sites in Canvas; simply click the 'Reading List' link to access it.

Books, chapters, and journal articles have reading priority tags. The University has defined three priority tags: Essential, Recommended, and Background. You can read the definitions here.

These tags help to guide you through the readings, and can assist with planning your work and managing your time.

The readings that have been tagged as Essential should be available online via the University Library. If any are not, please contact your module tutor in the first instance. Some Background readings may not be available via the Library, and this is in line with the University's policy of concentrating on providing access to Essential and Recommended readings.

For more information about your reading list visit the SkillsGuide for Finding books and journals. There are two pages:

  • Your reading list which includes key aspects of your module reading lists.
  • Using Reading lists at Hull which gives you an overview of the system.

question

Why is a title on my reading list not available via the Library?

Before your course starts, the teaching staff inform the Library which resources they would like to use.

If it is not possible for the Library to make a specific title available, the lecturer will choose an alternative. This should mean that you can access all of your Essential and Recommended reading list titles via the Library.

However, if you do find that something is not available you can use the Suggest a purchase form to let the Library know. We will check and let you know whether we can provide access.

Please read Library purchasing for information about why we cannot always provide access to resources such as eBooks and journal articles.

Looking ahead to your next module

You can view all of the available reading lists for your course at any time via the main reading list page at Reading lists at Hull. You can use the search box to look for any module by name, code, or the name of the person teaching it.

Please be aware that for new programmes, the reading lists for modules taught later in the course will be under development and become available nearer to the start of teaching.
