"I cannot imagine how anyone could write their thesis without using EndNote - I would go quite mad if I had to do all my referencing manually!"
EndNote is an extremely sophisticated bibliographic management package. It is available as a desktop program on all open-access university machines and as an online program to use from anywhere. The two versions can sync with each other to keep your own library of references up-to-date.
EndNote X9 and 20 (desktop)
On campus/university-owned computers
EndNote X9 is currently available on all open-access computers on campus. This will be replaced this summer by EndNote 20.
EndNote X9 can also be downloaded to other university-owned machines by accessing the Software Centre from the Windows menu.
If you have local admin rights, you can download EndNote 20 on a university-owned machine using the same process as for your own computer below.
On your own computer
The University's EndNote agreement allows University of Hull students and staff to install EndNote on their own Windows or macOS. Just visit the Support Portal and search ‘EndNote’.
EndNote Online allows you to access your library on machines that do not have the desktop library installed. To access EndNote Online follow this link myendnoteweb.com and create an account using your university email. Once you have gained access to EndNote Online, you can also download the free Cite While You Write installer (available from the Downloads tab) so that you can still cite within MS Word. You can also configure any desktop library to sync with your web-based library and so have an up-to-date version of your library on any machine with EndNote installed.
There is a free EndNote app available for the iPad which means you can read and make notes on papers in your EndNote library whilst you are on the go, or in the comfort of your armchair. Just search for EndNote in the app store.
Other EndNote styles
If you are studying Law or Chemistry, you may wish to download the OSCOLA or RSC EndNote styles. These are available on the pages below:
