Introduction

Reports of Parliamentary debates are usually known as Hansard, from the name of the company which produced them during much of the nineteenth century.

This page lists the various sources of these reports, both contemporary and historical, and other related publications.

Hansard only dates from 1803; all earlier debates are unofficial, collected from various private sources. Also, Hansard was not a complete record of all debates until it became the Official Report in 1909 - prior to then, it was selective.

Information on the history, operation and citation of Hansard can be found in the Communicating Parliamentary business section of the UK Parliament website. This provides an overview of how decisions made in Parliament have been communicated to the public since the early 17th century.
