Making Use of Bibliometrics: Institution-level metrics

A guide to bibliometrics and other ways to measure the impact of published research

Citation metrics can potentially contribute to an evaluation of research performance at the institutional level. Because of the different publication/citation patterns in different disciplines, an aggregate score for an entire university is unlikely to be meaningful.  However, institutional metrics for a specific discipline may provide data which can be used to compare research strengths with other institutions working in the same discipline, or to identify opportunities for collaboration.

Elsevier's SciVal database uses Scopus bibliographic data plus other sources to enable institutions to analyse their collected scholarly output by subject area, journal title, citation performance, media exposure and more.  It is necessary to register for a personal account to access SciVal - University of Hull staff should contact the Global Strategy Office (contact details on Sharepoint).
