English Language Support: Using language of caution

Overview

Sentences such as: ‘International students have significant problems with academic writing’ are unacceptable in terms of academic style, this is because it is important to never make very simplistic comments which are rarely completely true. If you are unsure of how you could modify this sentence in order to make it more academically honest, then this class could be useful for you.

Learning Outcomes

In this workshop, you will:

• • understand the purpose of cautious language
  • compile a bank of the most commonly used grammatical structures /expressions to express caution
  • practice the appropriate use of the language of caution to improve written texts
  • Identify areas for future study
