English Language Support: Adopting an impersonal style

How will this workshop help me?

Generally speaking, most academic writing is impersonal and it is not considered appropriate to use the word ‘I’. At the same time, however, your tutors are looking for your own critical awareness of your source texts and your ability to evaluate the ideas of others. This workshop is a grammar-based approach to producing written texts which present academic information in a non-personal way.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to 

• • use noun phrases to write concisely
  • improve written fluency and cohesion with noun phrases
  • employ impersonal verbs to discuss opinions and beliefs
