Skills Team Workshops: Reading Camp

Reading Camp

About this workshop

Workshop description

This session is a bit different to our regular workshops. Welcome to Reading Camp.

For this session, you will need to bring two journal articles that you wish to read (having them open on your screen or printed is fine). Reading Camp works particularly well if you are reading for your dissertation or thesis. Through Reading Camp, you'll learn how to read strategically, engage with your reading and synthesise your reading to identify patterns in the literature.

This interactive session is based on three reading activities which you will use on the articles you bring. While there is the opportunity for discussion, expect lots of silence as personal reading is a core part of this session.

Learning outcomes

By the end of Reading Camp, you will be able to:

  • Focus your reading through strategic reading
  • Respond to your reading by questioning it and identifying what it means.
  • Take better notes from your reading
  • Synthesise your reading to identify patterns, themes and gaps in the literature.

Who this workshop is for

Reading Camp is designed for postgraduate students reading for their dissertation or thesis.

Facilitator

This workshop is run by an Academic & Library Specialist from the Brynmor Jones Library Skills Team.
