Workshop description

Dissertation summer school is designed to give students working on longer assignments, such as dissertations, theses or Masters projects, a supportive space in which to receive guidance or support on academic writing, without having to wait for an individual appointment. The session is composed of two parts, and students are free to attend both or just the aspect that they would find the most useful. Students are also able to leave at any point during the second part of the session.

Students are encouraged to bring their own devices, but there will be some University laptops available.

The first part of the session will last approximately 30 minutes. This will include an overview talk on one aspect of dissertation writing (such as literature review guidance, engaging with sources, writing topic sentences), particularly if a topic has been requested in the previous session. It will also include a 5 minute writing warm-up exercise.

The second part of the session is 90 minutes structure writing time, with a member of the Skills Team facilitating and providing one-on-one advice and answering any queries.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session, you will:

• have had any academic writing or related skills based questions answered, receiving specific advice for your own drafts where appropriate.
• have had a structured and supportive environment in which to make progress with your writing.

Who this workshop is for

These sessions are most useful for Master's level dissertation students, embarking on longer research projects for the first time, but any student undertaking a significant piece of writing is welcome to attend.
