Making Sense of Research: Home

Introduction

The Graduate School is pleased to announce a new competition and exhibition to celebrate the University approved name change of the Graduate School to Doctoral College in June 2019.

‘Making Sense of Research’ is about making postgraduate research accessible to a range of non-specialist audiences within and beyond the University. There will be cash prizes in five categories:

Overall winner, runner-up, third prize, best poster, public vote.

‘Making Sense of Research’ will give our postgraduate researchers the opportunity to promote their research through any creative expression and sensory experience for the audience. Formats may include but are not limited to static and moving images, models, craftwork and virtual environments. Exhibits may engage any of the senses. The only restrictions are the size of the exhibit and its suitability for a public exhibition space. Details can be found in the entry guidelines.

The competition is open to all postgraduate researchers across all disciplines including those who have recently been awarded their degree. We encourage group entries. The competition will run from Saturday 4 May to Thurs 30 May 2019. Entries will be shortlisted, then there will be an exhibition and finally an awards ceremony on 25 June, 2019 which will take place in the Observatory on the 7th Floor of the Library. 

We anticipate that students will submit entries which are aesthetically appealing and contribute to the public understanding of their research. There is a separate category for research posters which are free of jargon and enhance non-specialists’ understanding of postgraduate research.
