Nursing students who request help through the Brynmor Jones Library Skills Team have always been referred to myself, Dr Jael Williams, who is a mathematics teaching fellow in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. In order to streamline the process, I requested that the students could book a numeracy session, through the already established Skills Team page, as I was certain that there were more nursing students out there requiring help, but only a few were able to find me.
This has been very successful as I am now able to help more students with the nursing numeracy tests that are a crucial element of the nursing degrees.
I had the good fortune to literally bump into Heather Pepper, and we arranged to meet to see how the support could be further extended. We set up a Canvas site of nursing support, called Numeracy Skills for Healthcare, and any student who requests support can be added to this site. This site contains a wealth of resources pertaining to the tests. Students are given bespoke quizzes to extend their knowledge and help them prepare for their examinations.
Heather has also arranged for me to have teaching sessions with the nursing students. In these we talk through types of questions and answers, and inform the students about the support available if needed.
